RISIEC Commissioners Resign, Following Supreme Court Invalidation of 2024 LG Poll in Rivers
Two commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral
Commission (RSIEC), Simeon Emenike Weli and Lazbery Nyebuchi Nna have resigned their
appointments with the commission following the Supreme Court invalidation of the
2024 local council poll in Rivers State and other unfolding political events.
In his resignation letter, addressed to the chairman of the
commission, Lazbery Nyebuchi Nna said the invalidation of the 5th
October 2024 LG election in Rivers State and other resultant events necessitated
his resignation.
"Sequel to the recent judgement delivered by the
Supreme Court of Nigeria, which annulled the 5th October, 2024 Local Government
Council elections in Rivers State and the unfolding events in the Commission, I
am compelled to resign my appointment as a Commissioner in the Rivers State
Independent Electoral Commission."
This development raises concerns about the ability of RISIEC
to conduct the scheduled August 2025 Local Government Elections.
The Rivers State House of Assembly had summoned the Chairman
of RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd), to appear before it within 48 hours
over the conduct of the 2024 local government election in Rivers State. The
house also threatened to issue a warrant for his arrest if he fails to appear
before the House at the expiration of the ultimatum.
The Rivers State House of Assembly also demanded the sack of
all commissioners under Governor Fubara administration within 48 hours, and ordered
the governor to submit a new list of nominees for appointments as commissioners.
