Cardinal Found Guilty of Fraud Demands to Take Part in New Pope's Election
By John Ollor Obe
Despite being labeled a “non-elector,” Italian Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, who was found guilty of fraud and embezzlement, has argued that he should be permitted to participate in the next conclave to choose a new Pope.
After a financial controversy, Pope Francis urged Becciu, who had previously held a key position in the Vatican, to resign his positions and privileges in 2020. In 2023, he was found guilty of financial offenses, but he has since challenged the decision.
The cardinal maintains that he should be permitted to assist in selecting the next Pope notwithstanding his current position.
