Funds Rivers Govt Gave NBA is a Gift, Not Loan - Human Rights Activist

Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer and human rights activist, claims that the funds that the Rivers State Government provided to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) should be recouped because they were a contribution rather than a loan.

Speaking on NigeriaInfo FM's Morning Crossfire, Mr. Adeyanju clarified that the NBA conference receives yearly donations from a number of the nation's states.  He claimed that because an individual he characterized as an unauthorized sole administrator could not preside over the conference, the NBA relocated its convention from Port Harcourt.  Mr. Adeyanju made this statement following the NBA's rejection of the assertion made by retired vice admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the only administrator of Rivers State, that the state had paid ₦300 million to obtain the privilege to host the association's 2025 Annual General Conference, which has now been transferred to Enugu State.

The NBA insisted in a statement that the funds from Rivers State were a gift unrelated to any alleged hosting rights.  Given the high expense of hosting the AGC, the legal body stated that it was typical for the organizing committee to seek assistance from organizations, state governments, and government agencies.  It emphasized that the sought support was unconditional and unrelated to hosting rights or any other rights, and it stated that it would avoid needless conflict with Ibas over this matter.
