The late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu's husband, Peter Nwachukwu, was sentenced to death by hanging on Monday by an FCT High Court located in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.  The decision was delivered by Justice Nwosu-Iheme, the presiding judge, who had already found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable murder in relation to the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.  The prosecution has proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, the court ruled.

On June 3, 2022, Nwachukwu was charged with 23 counts, including culpable homicide with a death sentence, spousal battery, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and other connected offenses. The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation arraigned him on behalf of the Federal Government.

Two of the couple's children were among the 17 witnesses the prosecution called throughout the trial, serving as Prosecution Witnesses 4 and 5.  Twenty-five documentary items were also shown in court.  Nwachukwu personally testified in his defense, summoned four more witnesses, and produced four exhibits.  Reginald Nwali, Nwachukwu's attorney, argued for mercy in his allocutus before to sentencing.  But Mrs. Aderonke Imala, the prosecution's attorney, pleaded with the court to use the full force of the law.

Nwachukwu was given a hanging death sentence on Count 1 by Justice Nwosu-Iheme.  Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18 also resulted in his being sentenced to two years in jail each.  He was sentenced to six months in prison on Count 10 and three years in prison on Count 11.  Additionally, the court fined Counts 6 and 7 N500,000 and N200,000, respectively.  The decision marks a momentous conclusion to a case that garnered national attention and brought attention to concerns of spousal violence and domestic abuse.
