Who Becomes the Next Pope

The two leading candidates in the Vatican for the position of Pope are Cardinals Peter Turkson and Luis Antonio Tagle.  These are the odds as reported by Newsweek.  Pietro Parolin (Italy) 4:1 Peter Turkson (Ghana) 5:1 Peter Erdő (Hungary) 6:1 Angelo Scola (Italy) 8:1 Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines) 3:1

What Takes Place Next?  Usually, a papal conclave starts 15–20 days after the pope's passing.  Cardinals from all around the globe can travel to Vatican City during that time, which also permits the burial ceremonies and the novemdiales, a nine-day period of sorrow.  Ideological groups within the Church will continue to debate between continuity and a more conservative change, and the decision won't be known until a pope is selected in the Sistine Chapel.  The Selection Process for the Next Pope:

The Selection Process for the Next Pope:  Popes are chosen in accordance with centuries-old Vatican customs.  Inside the Sistine Chapel, the College of Cardinals, which is made up of those under 80, will cast their votes in secret ballots.  A new pope can only be elected with a two-thirds majority.  Further voting rounds will be held until a candidate with the required support is identified if no agreement is reached.  Ballots are burned when a round of voting fails to produce a consensus, and the black smoke rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel alerts viewers in St. Peter's Square and on television that the conclave is still going on.  A new pope has been chosen when white smoke emerges.
