Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a former Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, was found guilty of killing 22-year-old Bamise Ayanwola and sentenced to death by hanging by a Lagos State High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike announced the verdict on Friday, finding Ominikoron guilty of several offenses, including rape and murder.
In February 2022, Ominikoron was charged with planning to attack and murder Bamise with the help of other people who are still at large. Tragically, the young woman never made it to her destination after boarding a BRT bus operated by Ominikoron.
Her naked and lifeless body was found by the side of the road a few days later, which infuriated the public and led to several demands for justice.
Despite his not guilty plea, the court found strong evidence that connected Ominikoron to the murder, rape, and conspiracy charges after a thorough investigation.
Justice Sonaike found that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and sentenced Ominikoron to death by hanging.
