Fresh Revelations Have Surfaced Regarding Resignation of Ganduje as National Chairman of the APC

- sources link the move to behind-the-scenes political manoeuvrings involving President Bola Tinubu and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Kwankwaso-Tinubu Alliance and APC Strategy

According to insider reports, Ganduje's decision to step down is tied to ongoing negotiations aimed at welcoming former Kano State Governor, Senator Kwankwaso, into the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move is seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader plan to reposition the ruling party.

Formal Resignation and Interim Leadership

Ganduje’s resignation was officially announced on Friday. Ali Bukar Dalori, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North) from Borno State, has been named the Acting National Chairman pending the election of a substantive successor.

In a formal statement confirming the development, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated:

“In his letter of resignation addressed to the National Working Committee (NWC) through the National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, Ganduje expressed gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Tinubu, for the opportunity to serve the party at the highest level.”

Internal Party Tensions and Resignation Fallout

Tensions reportedly escalated at the APC national secretariat from early Friday afternoon, with Ganduje threatening to resign by 3 p.m., shortly after news of the Tinubu-Kwankwaso rapprochement surfaced. Several senior party officials, including National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, attempted to dissuade him.

“We are currently pleading with him (Ganduje) not to resign. He is upset that Kwankwaso is coming to the APC. I think the two of them are sworn enemies. All the stakeholders are begging him to stay,” a party source disclosed.

Despite the interventions, confirmation of Ganduje’s resignation came shortly after 4:15 p.m.

“He has eventually resigned. We couldn’t stop him. I think there is something personal between him and Kwankwaso, who is ready to join the APC after some discussions with the President,” another insider said.

When asked about the atmosphere at the secretariat, a staff member noted:

“There is no crisis, just that the chairman has resigned and people gathered at the secretariat to discuss about it.”

Longstanding Rivalry with Kwankwaso

Ganduje’s tense relationship with Kwankwaso dates back to their time in Kano politics under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Kwankwaso served as governor from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2015, with Ganduje as his deputy during the latter tenure.

Their alliance fractured after Ganduje succeeded Kwankwaso as governor in 2015 under the APC platform. Since then, both men have become bitter rivals in Kano’s political landscape.

A key episode in their feud was the 2020 dethronement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi, a known Kwankwaso ally. Sanusi was reinstated on May 23, 2024, by Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which operates under Kwankwaso’s leadership.

Although Ganduje cited health reasons in his resignation, political analysts widely believe the Tinubu-Kwankwaso rapprochement was the decisive factor.

Reactions and Political Implications

Reacting to claims of Kwankwaso’s potential defection, close ally Buba Galadima stated:

“I am not aware of the defection plan. However, I know Kwankwaso and Ganduje have personal issues. I am equally aware that there was a meeting of APC stakeholders and the presidency three days ago where they agreed that Ganduje and Shettima should be sacrificed to bring a new set of people into government and the party.”

President Tinubu, who assumed office in 2023, is believed to be reshaping the APC to bolster its chances in 2027. Meanwhile, opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi are already mobilising for a coalition to challenge the ruling party.
